Frequently asked questions

Everything you'd need to know about how ModLinQ works — parts, builds, events, groups, karma, and selling.

Getting started

What is ModLinQ?

ModLinQ is a community platform for car enthusiasts. Tag the parts you've installed on your build, share photos and notes, see what other members are running on the same make and model, and find meets, groups, and cars for sale — all in one place.

Is it free to sign up?

Yes. Creating an account, building your garage, tagging parts, RSVPing to events, joining groups, and browsing cars for sale are all free.

Do I need to add a vehicle to use ModLinQ?

No, but adding a build unlocks the most useful parts of the platform — fitment-aware parts search, install posts, the activity feed, and karma. Most members add at least one vehicle.

Parts & installs

How do I tag a part on my build?

From your garage, click into a vehicle and use "Tag a new install" or run through Step 3 of the add-vehicle flow. You can search the catalog by name, attach a brand and retailer, set a rating, mark would-recommend, and add photos / videos / notes.

What's the difference between a "Catalog" and a "Custom" part?

Catalog parts are linked to ModLinQ's shared parts database — that means your install rolls up into the part's aggregate score and shows on its public page. Custom parts are free-text entries when nothing in the catalog matches; you can ask admin to promote one to a real catalog entry later.

What does the "Community-validated" badge mean?

A part earns it after enough installs come in with strong ratings, weighted by reviewer karma. "Trending" means it has momentum recently. "Member-rated" means it has at least one review. The exact thresholds are documented in the part code if you want the full math.

Are the retailer links affiliate?

Some are. Outbound retailer links route through /out/… for click tracking, and ModLinQ may earn a small commission on purchases. This never influences review scores or which parts surface in search. Full details on the affiliate disclosure page.

Karma & reputation

How do I earn karma?

Karma is earned when other members upvote your installs or your comments. Helpful, well-documented installs and useful answers earn the most.

What does karma do?

Karma weights your reviews — a long-time member with high karma counts more in a part's aggregate score than a new account. It also drives the leaderboard tiers (New → Member → Contributor → Trusted builder → Veteran).

Can someone downvote my install?

Yes, downvotes exist for moderation purposes (e.g., spam or wrong-fit), but they're used sparingly. Members can't self-vote.

Events

Can I host my own event?

Yes — anyone with an account can post one for free. Creating an event is at /events/create.

Do I have to RSVP to attend?

No, but RSVPing helps the organizer plan and lets you register your vehicle for shows that need it.

Are events visible to non-members?

Yes. Event listings and detail pages are public so they show up in search engines and can be shared. Only RSVP / vehicle registration require an account.

Groups

What's a group?

A group is a community within ModLinQ — usually organized around a make/model, region, or shared interest. Members post in group threads and can attach their builds.

How do invites work?

A group admin can invite you directly. You'll see pending invites at /invitations or in the dashboard widget. Accept to join.

Can I start a new group?

Yes. From /groups/find tap "Create group" and walk through the wizard.

Buying & selling

How does listing a build work?

Toggle "List this for sale" on a vehicle in your garage and add price, description, and photos. The listing automatically inherits the install history so buyers see exactly what's been done.

Is there a fee to list?

No listing fee at this time. ModLinQ doesn't take a percentage of private-party sales.

Where does the listing show up?

Cars-for-sale browse at /cars-for-sale/search and the dedicated buyabuild.com / sellabuild.com / findabuild.com domain aliases.

Brands & partnerships

How do brand partnerships work?

Brands and retailers can partner with ModLinQ for sponsored placement, featured-brand status, and (where applicable) affiliate tracking. Sponsored content is always clearly labeled and never affects review scores or organic search results. Apply at /partners.

Can I get featured if I run a small shop?

Yes — independent shops and tuners are welcome. The Partners page covers the four offerings: affiliate, sponsored placement, sponsored content, and featured brand.

Account & settings

How do I change my email or password?

Both live under /settings/account.

Can I customize what notifications I get?

Yes — /settings/notifications has per-type toggles for upvotes, comments, replies, follows, and more.

How do I delete my account?

Use the "Remove my account" button at the bottom of /settings/account. Contact support if you change your mind within 30 days.
